How To Replace A Car Battery In Eight Steps

A car battery will eventually wear down to the point where the battery no longer holds a charge. When that happens it is necessary to replace the battery with a brand new one. You can save yourself some money by installing the new battery on your car by following these simple steps.

To complete this task you will need the following items:

  • A wrench
  • A pair of gloves
  • A screwdriver

1 - Start by parking the car in a safe location like a driveway out of way of oncoming traffic. Pop the hood and use the prop rod to keep it from falling on your head, while you work on the vehicle.

2 - Turn off the car and let the engine cool off, then use the wrench to disconnect the negative connector on the battery. The negative terminal will be indicated with a minus sign so you know which one to disconnect.

3 - Using the wrench, disconnect the positive side of the battery, which are indicated on the battery with a plus sign.

4 - Remove the battery strap that holds the battery in place using the screwdriver and then take out the battery from under the hood. Save the screw from the battery strap and place it in a secure location, as you will need to put it back into the new battery.

5 - Set the new battery into place where the old one was and secure it in place using the battery strap. Screw the battery strap into place using the screw from the old battery and the screwdriver.

6 - Remove the battery caps over the battery and connect the positive one first using the wrench.

7 - Connect the negative terminal on the new battery using the wrench.

8 - Start the car to test that the battery is working to complete the job.
